Amyl nitrite is a common substance that once inhaled has the side effect of relaxing smooth muscles of the body. This would include the sphincter of the anus. Homosexuals find this effect delightful for obvious reasons. The result is that amyl nitrite and other nitrites are sold under various brand names but are known on the street as "poppers."

Poppers are sold either explicitly as a sexual aid and party drug or more covertly as air freshener or video head cleaner to get around drug laws. The substance opens up blood vessels in addition to anal dilation producing a euphoric high as blood rushes to the head. This makes the poppers very popular in discos and the club scene. Poppers can be found online or in adult bookstores.

Amyl nitrate is a substance used as an additive in diesel fuel to help with ignition. Amyl nitrate is often confused with amyl nitrite, but they are not the same substance.
