GATESHEAD THUNDER 32 SOUTH WALES SCORPIONS 66

By Ian Golden at Gateshead International Stadium

South Wales Scorpions ran up a season high game points tally as they eased to a win over Gateshead Thunder in a game not for defence coaches.

In all, 98 points were racked up over the 80 minutes with the Scorpions scoring 66 of them. Lewis Reece scoring a third of those points with Dalton Grant running over for four tries.

Scorpions took the lead on two minutes. Christiaan Roets laid off to Grant who went over under the sticks. Reece converted.

The action was repeated four minutes later with a move started with Loz Wildbore, worked it’s way out to the left where Roets again fed Grant. Reece goaled again to make the score 12-0.

The third try came on 13 minutes when on the opposite side of the pitch, Ashley Bateman set up Curtis Cunningham. Reece missed the tricky kick.

Grant grabbed his hat-trick three minutes later, again set up by Roets in a move started by Lee Williams. Reece’s conversion was wide.

Roets, after setting up three, almost grabbed a try of his own but dropped the ball under pressure as his arm reached out for the try-line.

Steve Parry thought he’d broken away for a potential try but was brought back for a high tackle and Gateshead were awarded a scrum.

They didn’t waste the opportunity as Stephen Welton ran through from dummy half in the second tackle. Ryan Clarke missed the kick.

And they almost grabbed another when Gary Sargeant held up over the line after a surging run.

But Scorpions recovered and straight away went upfield. Parry made it to the half way line and Casey Bromilow ran the rest. Reece goaled.

The unlucky Parry had another try chalked out, this time for a double movement but following a 40-20 from Wildbore, Lewis Reece ran through a gap as wide as the Tyne to ground, converting his own try.

There was still time for some action before the interval. Tom Hodgson had a try ruled out for a forward pass and the Scorpions went in 32-4 up at the break.

Roets finally got his try just after the break when Steve Parry put him through and he twisted past the defence. Reece converted.

Gateshead almost got a try back but Will Bate dropped the ball when diving for the line. Scorpions took a quick tap penalty and Cunningham ran almost the length of the field. Reece missed the conversion.

After a delay due to injuries to Lee Williams and Loz Wildbore, Gateshead regrouped and got another try back as Welton stormed under the posts for his second with Clarke converting.

But Scorpions addressed the balanced on 55 minutes when Parry squeezed through for a well-deserved try which Reece converted.

Gateshead hit back on the hour when David Cash burst through from short range and Clarke converted.

And Hodgson topped off an excellent performance when from kick-off he scored a fine individual try. Clarke goaled to make the score 22-48.

Scorpions scored again on 65 minutes when debutant Bradley Hill reacted well to a Gateshead error, kicking the ball through for Grant to latch onto and run through for his fourth try of the game. Reece converted.

Loz Wildbore added Scorpions’ 11th try of the game from kick-off running under the sticks when Reece easily goaled.

Thunder got another try back when Ash Williams slipped his markers on the left wing to dive over in the corner.

They weren’t finished yet as Cash grabbed his second four minutes later. Clarke’s conversion went in off the post.

But the Scorpions had the final say when substitute Tom Burnell burst the tackle and went under the posts. Reece converted to make the score 66-32.
