The first time I sat down to watch Donnie Darko, I stopped watching the moment it got weird. I don't like weird movies. These are the ones where you get sucked into the mystery of it only to be very disappointed later with the answer to the mystery. This would be an M. Night Shyamalan movie. This would be Dark City.
As the years went by, I kept reading rave reviews on the internet from others about Donnie Darko. The enthusiasm seemed genuine for what would become a cult hit. So, I sat down and watched the movie, and all I can say is that it delivers.
The film begins by setting itself in 1988. I'm not sure why that year was picked, but the action centers on teen named Donnie Darko who has troubling visions and is seemingly schizoid. The guy has visions of a demonic rabbit, and he is told the world will end. Then, a jet engine crashes through his room. From there a plot unfolds concerning time travel and teen angst.
The best parts of the movie concern that teen angst. You laugh out loud at what Donnie says and what he does in the movie. But you are still wrapped up in the mystery of it that is never fully settled even after you have watched the film. But the film does end with a satisfying conclusion. I don't want to spoil it for you, so you will have to watch it. But like all great movies, it will remain in your thoughts long after you are done watching it.
