A Few Thoughts On the Death of Osama Bin Laden

I was watching Donnie Darko with my girlfriend when the news came from the other room that Obama would come on to announce that Osama bin Laden was dead. I finished the movie.

I listened to the replay of Obama's speech, and I had mixed feelings. I am glad that OBL caught a bullet. I am not glad that they buried him at sea. I would have preferred his body dragged through the streets of New York around Ground Zero and his head put on a stake in front of the Pentagon. Innocent people died because of that fucker, and he deserved what he got.

The thing that sickens me is the trillion dollars and massive loss of life that the USA has conducted over the last decade to go get this guy. I have yet to see the justification for any of this. These foreign interventions have done nothing except play into Osama bin Laden's strategy used in Afghanistan to crush empires by entangling them in a quagmire. OBL spent a decade laughing about his success.

The Arab world has thoroughly renounced the violent tactics of al Qaeda as witnessed by the uprisings in Tunisia, Bahrain, Egypt, and Syria. Nothing succeeds like success, and these successes are showing the way for those people. You don't need terrorism to win.

But the part that really sickens me was watching Obama on air refer to himself repeatedly. It was almost like he personally pulled the trigger on OBL. The reason it sickens me is because he now has some fresh political capital which he will squander on some more tomfuckery that will utterly fuck this nation. He could use the capital for something useful like actually earning that mistaken Nobel Peace Prize to end the wars and bring our troops home. But he won't. Hillary has already spoken. The death of OBL is only the newest reason to keep playing the oldest game in the world--minding other people's business. The empire goes on.

The bullshit will not end until the money dries up. That is the bottom line. OBL will have the last laugh in death. Governments and politicians never learn.
