College Sport Research Institute 2008 Scholarly Conference on College Sport

Contrary to what some individuals and organizations would have folks believe, there is a great deal of critical college-sport research, both academic and journalistic, being conducted today. In addition, while the NCAA has held a BCS style, invitation only, colloquium on college sport, the College Sport Research Institute (a grassroots organization of college-sport researchers) http://csri.memphis.edu
will be hosting a four-day Issues in College Sport Symposium & Scholarly Conference on College Sport at The University of Memphis April 16-19, 2008.

The program includes an all-day symposium on Thursday, April 17 that includes a keynote address by Sonny Vaccaro, Former Director of Basketball Programs for Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and three panel discussions including:

"College Athlete Exploitation and Exclusion:
The Dual Challenges of Compensating Athletes Fairly and Achieving Gender Equity"

"College Athletes and Social Activism:
Do you know the way from San Jose?"

"Conducting the Business of College Sport 'Well'
Trends and Issues in College Sport"

In addition to the invited panels, the conference will feature 42 academic paper presentations (all of which underwent a triple, blind-review process) and 20 poster presentations detailing contemporary college-sport research. Scholars from across the United States and from as far away as New Zealand, will be on the campus of The University of Memphis for the conference events.

The early registration deadline is this Friday, February 15, 2008. Registration information can be found on the CSRI website http://csri.memphis.edu
(Credit card registration is accepted).

Information on hotel accomodations is also available on our website.

We look forward to individuals interested the social, political, legal and business issues surrounding college sport coming to Memphis for the conference.

Take care,

Richard Southall
Director
College Sport Research Institute
The University of Memphis
